Homemade Fal-op-fel

If you are what you eat, I'm probably an even mix of nut butters and hummus.  I dip my apples in nut butter, spread it on my toast, drizzle it on my oatmeal...the list goes on.  The same is true for hummus; I can eat it by the spoonful and constantly have to remind myself that it's simply not alright to eat an entire cup of dip in one sitting.

I have to admit, I'm getting a little dipped-out.  This tends to happen.  I eat these foods so frequently that they're somewhat, just slightly, losing their luster.  So, when an episode Secrets of a Restaurant Chef came on featuring Greek food, I could practically hear my Tupperware of hummus in the fridge.  It was saying, "Chop up an onion, sprinkle in some flour, and fry me up!"

I've never loved falafels.  Whenever I order them I expect something...different.  I can't quite put my finger on what I dislike, but they're just never what I want them to be.  Naturally, once the idea entered my head to make one myself, I couldn't resist the urge.

So I made two.  One for now, and one for...right after.  (Grr.  I'm stuck in one of my food-crazy ruts where I struggle with my urge to pick.  Working on that, again.)  The falafels were beautifully golden and crispy on the outside (I'd dare to say perfect), but the insides were too mushy.  My flip attempts were flops, and I ended up with a jumbled stack of fried hummus.  I know I didn't really fry them so much as I sauteed them in more oil.  Oh well.

That satisfied my cooking craze for the afternoon hours.  I still have the itch to bake with my new rolling pin - thanks, Dad! - but I have so much food in my cabinet and in the freezer that I can't bring myself to make something else!  I think the next week or two will be minimal shopping weeks and let's-purge-the-fridge-and-eat-creatively weeks.

Chicken sausage for dinner tonight!  Contemplating a side of sweet potatoes or broccoli rabe.  Yum.
